Note / A life of my own

Fun and learning. I mean both.

My definition of life, and why neither half works particularly well without the other.

My definition of life is fun and learning. I mean it quite literally.

Learning enlarges the life available to me. When I understand something I did not understand yesterday, I can make a better choice, solve a problem, appreciate a piece of music differently, or ask a more interesting question. The world acquires detail. My ability to act in it improves.

Fun is the pleasure of being alive to those possibilities. The satisfaction of getting something right. A conversation with someone who can think. A film that stays with me. An idea worth pursuing because I want to know where it leads.

There is no requirement that every pleasure justify itself on a spreadsheet. I am reasonably fond of spreadsheets. I do not propose to live inside one.

Equally, calling something fun does not excuse carelessness. Choices have consequences. The more clearly I understand them, the more freely I can choose the pleasures I actually want, rather than spend my time repairing the ones I did not think through.

Achievement belongs in this life. So do affection, curiosity, music and time that is entirely my own. I see no reason to build a successful enterprise and leave its owner out of the benefits.

Learn enough to make the life better. Enjoy enough of it to remember why that matters. Keep going.
