Founder. Writer. An independent mind with a considerable appetite for life.
I build businesses, write, ask questions and take considerable pleasure in being alive. I am the Founder and Group CEO of Zen Atlas Group. That tells you what occupies much of my working day. There is considerably more to the story.
Forty-five years of professional life have given me a great deal to make, question, keep and reconsider. This website brings those parts of my world together: the companies, the writing, the ideas still taking shape, and the small observations that deserve a place of their own.
I like a mind that can explain itself. I like the moment an idea begins to work. I like music, cinema, science, a good argument and the discovery that there is something else worth understanding.
My curiosity does not report to my job title. I intend to keep it that way.
HOW I SEE IT
My life.
My judgment.
I am an Objectivist. Reason, individual freedom, productive achievement and the pursuit of my own happiness are principles I take seriously. They shape what I build, the arguments I make and the relationships I choose.
I regard each person as the owner of their life, with the right to think, choose, produce and enjoy the result. Freedom carries responsibility for those choices. It also requires that I recognise the same freedom in others.
Value for value follows from that. I want to offer something worth having and recognise the value I receive. In business, that means useful products, honest agreements and delivery. In friendship and love, it means the qualities that make another person matter: honesty, affection, thought, trust and the pleasure of their company.
I have no apology to offer for ambition or earned wealth. I do have a standard for how they are pursued. Create something worthwhile. Deal honestly. Own the consequences.

Fun.
Learning.
Learning gives me more of reality to understand and more ways to act. Fun gives that expanding life its pleasure. I want the satisfaction of achievement and the freedom to enjoy what I have achieved.
A business can be an absorbing expression of both. So can a book, a piece of music, a conversation or a question in physics that refuses to leave me alone. I see no reason to limit a life to one department.
This is why the essays sit beside the notebook, and the enterprises beside the things I simply find interesting. They belong to the same person. The person is still at work, and still having a rather good time asking questions.
